VITAMINS: EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW

We Romans cram and poison ourselves with food and a succession of courses at a banquet. Sweet, sour, heavy, dainty, presented pell-mell in everyday vulgar profusion, confounding a mans palate and confusing his stomach with a detestable mixture of flavors, odors, and substances in which the true values are lost and the unique qualities disappear. Rather the Greeks know better—with fish grilled at the edge of the sea, vegetables so fresh and divinely clean, water directly from the spring—all diffusing within us the secret salt of the earth, and rain of heaven. All sick men should taste on their lips the small portions of this fresh simplicity."

Memoirs of Hadrian

by Marguerite Yourcenar

This amazing extract, which describes the health-deteriorating effects of overeating the earliest processed foods compared to eating whole foods, are the words (a historically accurate interpretation) of Hadrian, a Roman emperor almost 2,000 years ago. Surely this could easily describe the modern diet and the absolute fact that what is old is new, and truth is timeless. And the same can be said today of vitamin supplements.

The very first vitamin supplement ever created was Catalyn. It was made as a multi-nutritional food concentrate product (multivitamin) in 1929 by Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process Labs. Its ingredients and proprietary contents have not varied since 1929. Since that time, many new vitamins have been discovered. And thousands of "amazing," "startling," "new," "profound," and "cutting edge" supplements have been marketed. Remarkably, all the newly discovered vitamins, as well as all the nutrients found in all the newest products, can be found in today's Catalyn.

Thanks to often bizarre labeling laws, the label on Catalyn lists only 1200 IU of vitamin A, 4 mg of vitamin C, 312 IU of vitamin D, 0.2 mg of thiamine, 0.2 mg of riboflavin, and 1 mg of vitamin B6—not exactly a super-potent product! But since the product is a whole food, these and all the rest of the nutrients in this product are readily available for the body to utilize. And the real list of nutrients in Catalyn, derived from the blend of raw materials, would run into the thousands. Wheat germ; carrot root; yeast; extracts of adrenal, liver, spleen and kidney; pea vine juice; alfalfa juice; mushroom; oat; lecithin; bran and more are all used.

Catalyn has not changed since 1929. The things that have changed over time are our agriculture, food-processing, and supplement‑making industries. In addition, the mineral content of our soils has changed. And the nutrient content of our fresh produce has changed. A fresh orange farmed in 1929 contained 10 times the whole vitamin C content of an orange grown today. Today it takes 50 cups of spinach to get the same quantity of some nutrients as 1 cup provided in 1929. And today chemical copies of vitamins and every possible nutrient, most of which are excreted from your body immediately, are sold as expensive, high-potency nutritional supplements.

When a nutrient can't be chemically copied, supplement makers find the cheapest source of material from which to make the supplement. Crushed rock and sawdust are used to produce calcium supplements. At best these are poorly absorbed and utilized. Crushed rock, shells, or coral contain calcium carbonate. Eating calcium carbonate requires 15 enzymatic reactions by your body before the calcium becomes usable. Each one of these reactions requires enzymes and other vitamins that are often deficient in the general population.

So the calcium-gulper ends up with worsening nutritional deficiencies and excess calcium in his or her system that cannot be utilized. It settles out (much like the white sediment on a teapot) in joints, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, the heart, and more. This causes arthritis, plaque, kidney stones, cataracts, and calcification as well as skewing the calcium-to-potassium and calcium-to-other-mineral ratios in the body. And still, these supplements are often called the "newest" and the "greatest."

Calcium Lactate by Standard Process was first manufactured the year I was born, 1947. It is made from fermented sugar beets, and as such requires only one enzymatic reaction to become the active calcium that your cells and tissues crave. That is why you need so much less of it than all other calcium supplements, which are mostly wasted.

Minerals from rock and sawdust can barely be utilized by your body. That's because minerals are stored in the earth. They are grown into the plants in an organic form. The plants then become part of the animals (including us) that eat them. There is no way around this. Calcium Lactate from 1947 or the latest super-potency calcium supplement with all the hoopla—but still made from crushed rock? Truly, in this case, what is old is new, and by far, the best.

The same holds true for most of our oils, including fish and cod liver oils. The old oils were simply crude fish or cod liver oil treated minimally. Today the processed fish or cod liver oil product for your consumption is primarily industrially manipulated, super-heated, stripped of most of its true nutrients, and deodorized. If you want to perform a simple test, put your fish oil in the freezer. If it freezes solid, it is not worth eating.

Today most people want the "cutting edge" and the newest discovery supplement But when it comes to supplements, often the old, and always the least processed, most organic, most raw, most whole-food, and most nutrient-dense are certainly the best. Unfortunately, with all the hype, the magazines with beautiful women and muscular men, the latest "studies," and the lies, it is tough for you to tell the truth. Remember, for too many high-priced, super-potent nutritional supplements, the label costs more to produce than the ingredients in the bottle!
